Atrophic vaginitis is a condition that causes thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls. It occurs due to the decrease level of estrogen that occurs most often with menopause. Other situations that may lead to low estrogen levels include breastfeeding, surgical removal of the ovaries, and the use of certain medications.
