Amenorrhea

Amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation. It is termed primary amenorrhea if a menstrual cycle fails to occur by the age of 15. It is termed secondary amenorrhea if the menstrual cycle stops at some point after menarche. Amenorrhea can be caused by many conditions such as pregnancy, excessive exercise or weight loss, stress, eating disorders, medications, tumors, radiation, genetic or anatomical abnormalities, endocrine disorders, abnormal ovarian function, or polycystic ovary syndrome. It is important to first evaluate the cause of amenorrhea so that appropriate treatment can be determined.
