Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is the most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge in reproductive age women. It occurs due to a change in the normal flora of the vaginal environment and is not a true infection. Although some patients will have no symptoms, women commonly present with abnormal vaginal discharge and a fishy odor. BV rarely occurs in women who are not sexually active. However, it is not considered a sexually transmitted infection because it is not caused by the transmission of a single pathogen.
